The women’s 4K race consisted of four laps of just under 1K with a little bit extra at the start which was unfortunately the last few hundred metres of uphill and into the wind finish section! Jackie Carty of Kilmore had a comfortable victory over the wet slippery ground. Second was DMP’s Anne Sullivan with Helen Doyle of Kilmore third. Our own Catherine Walsh was 4th overall and 1st over 40. Kilmore won the team event with Catherine, Mag Dunphy and Ciara Kearney taking team silver for Slaney. Other age category winners were Mag (over 50 on her birthday!). Annis Kehoe (over 55) and Jane Porter (over 60).
The men’s 6K race was six and a half laps (seven times up the dreaded hill). As the race progressed the underfoot conditions went from bad to worse with every blade of grass in some sections disappearing under a sea of muck. Add to the recipe stiff wind to make a really tough test. We had a great turnout of runners despite the conditions. Myles Gibbons of SBR was first home ahead of Ted Flannelly of United Striders. John McGrath (US) was third. Dave Barron led Slaney home in 4th place and 1st over 45. Farmer Monaghan was not far behind and won the over 40 title. Billy Reck also had a great run and helped the team to win bronze. Well done to everyone who ran their hearts and legs and everything else out under such difficult conditions: Bobby Redmond, Paul Browne, Jessie O’Connor, Pudgy Hyland, Brian Maher, Neil Hudson, Paul Murphy and Ger Murphy.
