Congratulations to our ladies and men’s teams who both won silver last Sunday at the County Novice Championships and to Kelly Long who took individual bronze in the women’s race.
The course this year was in Kilmore and consisted of a 1K lap over flat pasture. The women were off first and ran 3 laps. Kelly led out the Slaney Olympic team followed by Sabina, Helena, Gretta and Tracey. Kelly was lying third over the first two laps but slipped back a little at the start of the third lap. But bravery and determination took over in the last 100 metres as she accelerated at amazing speed to cross the line in bronze medal position.
We also had five runners in the mens race which was over six laps. The first lap was at a relatively gentle pace and the field was well bunched. Rory led out the Slaney Olympic team followed by Pudgie, Peter, Neil and John O’Connor. As the pace picked up the runners were soon well spread out. Rory had an excellent race finishing 4th overall as did all our runners. Pudgie was 11th, Peter 13th, Neil 16th and John 17th. The importance of every member of the team was illustrated by the result. The efforts of Neil and John in passing a Kilmore runner near the finish meant we won silver by just one point.
