There was a great turnout of runners at the inaugural County Intermediate Road race Championships hosted by Slaney Olympic on the Old Dublin Road on 26th April. Congratulations to Martin Monaghan on winning the his race and on leading our men’s team (Farmer, Conall Cooper, Rory McCauley & John Foley) to claim team gold.
It was great to see so many runners in both races with 27 competing in the women’s race and 43 in the men’s event. Thanks to Nolan’s Health and Fitness Gym for the use of their premises for parking and the finish area and to their helpful staff for assisting with the tea making afterwards.
There is a description of the race and full results below:
Anne Gilshinan (Menapians AC) quickly made her intentions
clear in the women’s event by racing away from the rest of the field and it was a very impressive
solo run from there as she crossed the finish line more than a minute ahead of
Danielle Hennessy (SBR), who had won the Wexford Novice Road Race two months
ago. Hennessy got the better of an excellent tussle for Silver with Tracy
Flanagan (United Striders). Menapians won the team title, thanks to Anne’s
winning effort plus Niamh O’ Brien finishing fifth and Catherine O’ Connor in
sixth.
The Men’s race was next up over 8km, with the field being
tightly bunched for the first mile. However, Martin Monaghan (Slaney Olympic)
then moved to the front, followed by his teammate Conall Cooper, the pair
racing clear of Denis Moynihan (SBR) and Ger Maloney (St Pauls). Inside the
final mile, Martin made his race winning move and he kept a strong pace to the
finish to win by seven seconds from Denis who got the better of Ger for the
silver by a mere one second. Slaney Olympic won the team title thanks to the
efforts of the race winner, Conall Cooper in fourth, Rory McCauley in ninth and
John Foley in tenth.
