The annual Mick Murphy Memorial 4 Mile Race took place on Saturday 15th in Ferns. 18 Slaney Olympians took to the start line at 5pm in a field of nearly 200 runners.
The first short lap around the town is a good test of strength as the second climb up the hill past the church soon had the field well stretched out. The green vests of the visitors from Rathfarnham WSAF AC were very much to the fore with Sean Hehir leading the field home in 19.25. Tom Hogan of SBR was second in 19.59 with third place going to Thomas Hayes of Kilkenny City Harriers in a time of 20.00. Jason O’Connor continued his great form leading the Slaney men home in 14th position. Farmer was close behind in 16th with Jim Stafford just two places further back in 18th. A little further back came another Slaney trio of Mick Jordan, Bobby Redmond and Billy Reck, tightly bunched in 31st, 32nd and 34th places. Eoin Keane was not far behind in 38th and stalwart Mick Morrissey finishing 53rd and Malo Roban 57th.
Catherine Murphy is back running in style finishing third in the women’s race which was won by Maria McCambridge just ahead of Fionnuala Britton in second position.
The rest of us fought our own little battles further back the field with Sabina continuing to run strongly and improve on her times. She was 2nd Slaney woman home with Helena Browne 3rd just over a minute behind. Jane Porter won the womens over 55 prize.
