Congratulations to all who ran in the County Senior Cross Country Championships last Sunday. The club had a good day with both women’s and men’s teams finishing in silver medal position and taking individual bronze in both races also.
In the women’s race Catherine Murphy started off conservately in seventh position. After two laps of the three lap, 5K course she was lying fourth. In the last 400 metres of the final lap she put her foot on the accelerator and passed Anne Sullivan of DMP to finish comfortably in bronze medal position behind Fiona and Jackie from Kilmore AC. She led the team home to silver along with Siobhan O’Shea (7th) and Mag Dunphy (10th). Well done also to our second team of Ciara Kearney, Sabina Sweeney and Michelle Doyle.
In the men’s race Tom Hogan of SBR led the field from start to finish. Kevin Murphy ran strongly in second position over the first two laps of the six lap, 10K course and ended up taking bronze just behind Paul Gibbons in a very competitive race. He led the Slaney Olympic team home to silver medal position with great runs from Dave Barron (5th), Jim Stafford (6th) , Martin Monaghan (7th), Colm Cooper (11th) and Mick Jordan (13th).
Afterwards the teams and a few welcome visitors from some other clubs enjoyed the hospitality at the new Slaney Olympic Tent where the events of the day were analysed in great detail. A big thank you to the ladies for the tea, coffee, mince pies and all the rest
