Both women’s and men’s teams struck gold at the Wexford County Novice cross country championships with Catherine Murphy winning individual gold on her first outing at county level. There was a great turnout of club runners at the county novice cross country championships in Adamstown on a mild and murky Sunday afternoon. The women were first off where we fielded a full two teams. Kilmore took the early lead but Catherine Murphy bided her time and by the end of the first of the three 1,000 metre laps had moved into pole position. Behind Siobhan O’Shea and Helena Brown were moving up the field. Catherine finished a very comfortable winner with Siobhan in 5th place and Helena in 7th position giving the team a four point win over SBR. The second ladies team of Sabina Sweeney, Ciara Kearney and Jane Porter finished in bronze medal position.
In the men’s race James Cloney of St Killian’s led the field out from start to finish. The Slaney Olympic trio of Fergal McCauley, John Roban and Niall O’Connor ran strongly finishing in 4th, 5th and 6th positions respectively with fourth team member, in a titanic struggle, (see photos in Gallery!) to keep his place and secure team gold. Second Slaney Olympic team of Malo Roban, Neil Hudson, Mick Nolan and Paul Brown were pipped for third place by a mere three points.
Well done to all who came out and ran for the club and to all the members who came along to support. A big thank you to Ciara Catering for the wonderful tea and sandwiches in the field afterwards.
