A total of 28 Slaney Olympic runners headed for the County Novice/Masters road championships in Bridgetown on a bright and sunny Sunday morning on March 14th. Most of us got there but a couple of the ladies got waylaid following signs for the ?? Harriers point to point races! This put pressure on the ladies teams but with seven runners we managed to field one novice and one veteran team.
The ladies race was a nearly flat 3K circuit with the men doing two circuits.
In the ladies race Martina Conran put in a great performance to finish 3rd overall. Teamwise we took 2nd in the Novice and 3rd in the Masters – a good showing for the ladies who have struggled to put full teams together in the past. Well done captain Mary Doyle.
In the mens race Slaney Olympic dominated. In the Masters category Dave Barron finished 1st, Kevin Murphy 2nd, and the ever young and fit Jim Stafford 4th. Together with Pat Hyland the team took gold. Thanks to the efforts of Mick Morrissey, Maurice Whitty, Pat O’Sullivan and Edward White we also won bronze. In the novice race we were 1st team again with good runs from Mick Jordan, Brian Murphy, Martin Monoghan and John Roban.
